Information for parents

Is spelling practice a daily battle? The resources at Spellbound Storybooks are the perfect tool to make learning spellings fun.

How are spellings taught in school?

Usually, children are taught spellings every week that contain a particular sound or follow a particular rule. As well as this, children must learn words from the national curriculum that do not necessarily match the taught rules. In year 1 and 2, these words are referred to as 'common exception words'. In year 3, 4, 5 and 6, they are referred to as 'statutory spellings'. There is a year 3 and 4 list of hundred words and a year 5 and 6 list of another hundred words. They are a combination of words that are frequently used or often misspelt. These words can be challenging to learn and difficult for children to understand.

Why are the statutory spellings important?

In order to meet are related expectation (ARE) for writing in their academic year, children must spell and use the words accurately.

How will the storybooks help my child?

The statutory spelling words pose two challenges: children can struggle to master the spelling of the words and they also often lack understanding of their meaning. Spellbound Storybooks solve those problems. They:

  • expose children to the words in context

  • enthuse children with their amusing plots, lovable characters and hilarious pictures

  • provide a fun and engaging starting point for discussion about the spelling and definition of the words

  • include a range of suggested spelling strategies to help children practise and master the spellings

  • include a range of suggested writing activities that provide an opportunity for children to use the words in their own writing

The matching spelling/grammar and reading comprehension workbooks provide further exposure to and practice of the spellings.

The e-book (pdf digital storybook) can be displayed on a phone, tablet, laptop or similar device and read and enjoyed together. A printable pdf version is also included for you to print if desired. The spelling words are not marked in bold in the KS2 printable versions, therefore allowing your child to follow the story and highlight them as they read.
